Ting Rei Tan

Ting Rei Tan is a Sydney Horizon Fellow and an Australian Research Council Future Fellow at the School of Physics at the University of Sydney. He was trained by David Wineland, a Nobel Laureate in Physics, at the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology. Ting Rei’s research centred on quantum computation quantum simulations of chemistry. In 2016, his results on trapped-ion quantum computing were selected as one of the “Top 10 breakthroughs in Physics.” Presently, he is developing a new simulation technique that uses well-controlled quantum systems to address computationally challenging photochemistry problems relevant to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of photoactive molecules, which could project impacts in photodynamic therapy. He leads the only Australian team, which brings together expertise in physics, chemistry, and medicine, to compete in a research challenge program funded by the Wellcome Leap’s Quantum for Bio program.
